Free School Meals & Universal Free School Meals

All children in reception, year 1 and year 2 in state-funded schools in England will be entitled to receive universal free school meals. The government made this decision after a recommendation in the School Food Plan. Even if your child has taken up the universal free school meals, if your family is in receipt of any of the benefits listed below, please also apply for free school meals from the Kent County Council website here.

Registering could raise an extra £1,300 per year for your child’s school to fund valuable support like extra tuition, additional teaching staff or subsidise after school activities. If your child is in year 3 and above, you can also apply for free school meals in the normal way here if your family is in receipt of any of these benefits.

  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseekers Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Support from NASS (National Asylum Support Service) under part 6 of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • The guarantee element of State Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit (with no Working Tax Credit) with an annual income of no more than £16,190
  • Working Tax Credit run-on
  • Universal Credit

Should you require any assistance please contact our Family Support Team. This additional money is available from central government for every child whose parent is receiving one of the above benefits. It is therefore important to sign up for free school meals, even if your child is in Reception, Year 1, Year 2, so that we receive as much funding as possible.
