Manor Community Primary

Eco Council

Our Eco Council is made up of 2 children from each class in years 5 and 6.

The children decided on what area they thought was important to them which includes recycling in school and improving the area and areas around the school to be more environmentally friendly for all the community.

Meeting Jim Dickson - MP for Dartford

The Eco Council and School Council were happy to meet with Jim Dickson, the MP for Dartford.  The councils prepared lots of important questions before his visit.

At the meeting they took it in turns to ask the questions and listened politely to his answers.

Topic that were covered was the ongoing traffic issue in the local area due to the closure of Galley Hill.  Provisions in the local parks for the children and the possibility of expanding what is available for them. The children asked if it was possible to plant wild seed areas where there are just patches of grass.

Jim Dickson took lots of notes away from the meeting and has promised the children that he will bring their concerns up to the relevant people. Jim wrote the children this lovely letter:

Working With The Local Council

The Eco Council was asked by the local council if they would help develop and plant the area of grass opposite the main gate on Keary Road.  Thank you to Les who works for the council who prepared the area and soil for our planting session.  The children really enjoyed planting the area and since the plants are thriving in their new environment.

Part of planting this area is to increase the bio-diversity of the area and to deter people from parking on this grass.

KCC Grant

Manor Community Primary School was selected by the Department For Education to receive a £5,000 grant to increase the bio diversity of the school.  We worked in partnership with a company called Regenerous to look at the grey spaces in the school and plan how we could make them more "green".

As a school we are lucky to have lots of green areas and blooming bio diversity.

We decided on developing the main playground as this is a large concrete square.

Regenerous constructed 10 large planters.  The Eco Council then took part in a planting session with Patrick from Regenerous.  At a later date seating will be added between the planters so the children have an area where they can watch the plants grow and hopefully see the increased wildlife that is attracted by the beautiful flowers.

It was important to us that the flowers had a sensory element to them so we add not only colour but plants that would give off a soothing scent for the children.
